On a yawl moored in the Thames, Marlow tells his shipmates how he once piloted a battered steamboat up the Congo in search of Kurtz, a brilliant ivory agent gone mysteriously silent in the interior. What he finds is not a man but a ruin: a station rotted by greed, a riverbank choked with violence, and at the end of it all a voice that has seen the worst of what an empire makes of itself.
Conrad's short, hypnotic novella set the template for a century of writing about colonialism, complicity and the unstable line between civilisation and savagery. It is the source text for Apocalypse Now and a continuing subject of debate and reckoning.
