In 1937, seventeen-year-old Zhang Zhiming is taken from his home in Manchuria and transported to a secret Japanese facility known only as Unit 731. There, he is stripped of his name, reduced to a number, and confined to a children's block where prisoners are subjected to horrific medical experiments.
Inside the compound's grey walls, Zhang encounters Alina, a Russian girl who has lost everything to the war, and Akira, a Japanese soldier and poet tormented by his own conscience. Through whispered conversations, hidden observations, and acts of quiet defiance, three strangers become entangled in a story of survival, love, and moral witness.
As World War II collapses around them, Zhang must decide whether to escape alone or perish with those he cannot save. Decades later, as an old man feeding pigeons in a Beijing park, he carries the weight of the dead—and a promise made in darkness.
